Introduction
Description
In the heart of the Monti Sibillini National Park, of which it is the seat, Visso is an enchanting mountain centre that boasts a past rich in history: the historic centre amazes with its succession of lmponentl walls, towers, medieval houses and balconies, Renaissance palaces, stone portals carved with family crests and Latin mottos. All the elements contribute to an ensemble of harmony and grace. The most representative sight and heart of the village is the Piazza dei Martiri Vissani, bright and harmonious, bordered by elegant 15th- and 16th-century palazzi and characterised by the beautiful façade of the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria, dating back to the 12th-12th centuries, inside which are precious medieval works of art, and the Church of Sant'Agostino. The latter, now deconsecrated, houses the Museo Civico, which preserves paintings of considerable interest and a group of Leopardi's manuscripts.
Other fine buildings are the 14th-century Baptistery, the Palazzo dei Priori the Palazzo dei Governatori and the Palazzo del Divino Amore. 9 km from the centre, in a picturesque position, isolated amidst the Apennine pastures, stands the Sanctuary of Macereto, from the forms of Bramante, erected in the first half of the 16th century.
A visit to Visso must include an exploration of the town's gastronomic delights: the Apennine centre excels in the production of cheeses and cured meats, among which the clauscolo, a spreadable salami made from a mixture of pork came, is undoubtedly the best.
